i read somewhere that Kenneth can fall asleep at will by pressing on a "kill switch". that actually sounds pretty useful! it's no fun lying awake in bed. could i get some descriptions on how to go about cultivating this?

nirodha-samÄpatti
In the questions on Samatha section it is refered to as a kill switch, also on some threads. A link provide in the questions section: www.palikanon.com/english/wtb/n_r/nirodha_samaapatti.htm
I seem to recall reading this is only possible post third path, so I have no real understanding of it.

there seem to be two sets of instructions to reach NS. the link RevElev gave, as well as MCTB i think, indicates you go through the 8 jhanas in the right mix of samatha and vipassana, then after leaving the 8th you reach NS. the second way seems to be to find the "kill switch" and press on that. can i get instructions on the second way? like in what state can i find the kill switch, where is it located, general instructions for pressing on it, how to press on it to fall asleep instead of entering NS (which i understand are different), etc.

Ah OK, this seems to be what i was looking for:
"If you turn your attention into a beam like that of a flashlight, you can wave the beam around inside your skull. When you wave it across the area just behind the 3rd eye, you may feel a deep calm and the beginning of power down. If you leave the beam focused there, the mind will power down very smoothly. There is no need to strain. It does take a lot of practice, well-developed concentration and, of course, the anagami attainment."

...yeah.
I would say at least here in KFDh most of the people that have experienced NS for the first time was right before attaining to 3rd path (some would argue that IT WAS attaining to 3rd path, and they only notice the shift a few days later). I'm part of the "slow" crowd (hehe) as I entered it after 4th. There is something special, in my opinion that happens in terms of experimental development after exiting from NS.
I propose a little game!
Let us see who can go into NS for longer than 2 seconds!! (that seems to be so far the "gold standard")
....just kidding! (kinda)
