Hey guys,
What sorts of things have worked as kasinas that you might not expect, or that had interesting results?
I'll start out with the moon tonight during the eclipse. It turns out that the rusty circle in the sky was a great kasina, in sharp contrast to the normal full moon. The normal moon is so bright against the dark sky that it makes my eyes cross. But the dark eclipsed moon worked great. Except when it started looking like it was falling down. I've seen weird things happen in the no-man's-land between jhanas before, but I'd never seen that!
It turns out, some clouds were moving across the sky, and by optical illusion the moon appeared to be moving in the opposite direction as the clouds. It was funny, until the constant movement made it too hard to concentrate.

ive pretty much found just about any object can work as a kasina... like anything... take a door knob for example... or the letter "O" on a page... Sanskrit letters or mantras... I should try the moon though, i bet that would be more energetic of a kasina :0

That's so pretty! I might desire it too much for it to make a good kasina... then again, I've found that my concentration is best with a kasina that I actually find visually appealing.
The Tibetan letter AH on a background of the 5 rainbow lights is an interesting kasina, but it does so many curious and interesting things that I can't help but investigate my way into vipassana territory. I just can't do pure shamatha with it. But if anyone wants to check it out, then look at an example here: fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/037/3/e/...an_A_by_grebenru.jpg
Note that the background is supposed to be dark blue, like the sky at dawn. It can be changed in MS paint pretty easily.
