energy from meditation interrups sleep cycle was created by thitatto
Hello,
Whenever I start up my meditation practice again, so much energy starts to circulate in my body (I feel tingling comfortable sensations throughout my whole body) that I find it hard to sleep, and when my mind and body is "warmed up" from the meditation earlier in the day, lying in my bed in the evening becomes as if I was meditating and that stimulates this energy even more. So even if I felt tired when I went to bed, lying there is just recharging my energy and it becomes impossible to fall asleep. This has knocked my daily life out of balance over and over, and I find it hard to maintain a daily meditation practice, even though I can't let it go because I clearly have "insight disease" and feels compelled to return to it over and over again, but this same sleep interruption thing just keeps happening. Any advice on what I can do?

just thought I share my 2 cents as meditation has interrupted my sleep patterns in the past. However, I have been affected by negative stuff like worry, restlessness, fear, misery type stuff that made it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. I resorted to exercise and it helped. I would do hard exercise that I knew would really exhaust me like sprint intervals, swimming, heavy weight lifting. When things were particularly difficult I would resort to over the counter sleep aids and amino acids like 5-htp. People have reported strict concentration practice or a qigong can be calming, grounding and induce sleep but I do not have experience here. Perhaps others will weigh in. An acupuncture session my also be helpful. Hope this helps.

If you're in the A&P you'll get these kinds of reactions, but once you land in Dissolution you won't be able to stay awake. That's been my experience. If it's not A&P it could be an energy imbalance, in which case I second the acupuncture recommendation.

Hmmm..... Don't know what is going on. This time I'll try to just put on a lot of alarm clocks if I only get a few hours of sleep, push myself through the following day, and still continue to meditate.

I never really got back to how I used to sleep before I started meditating but it doesn't bother me now. If I meditate more than usual, such as going to a workshop or retreat), I sleep more lightly and less. I nearly always wake up at 5am and just get up. I don't really enjoy laying around in bed anymore. I can sleep easily (doze anyway) sitting in a chair, so I doze for short intervals on planes, trains, in doctor's offices, for a few minutes at my desk, or other times like that if I feel like it. When i was meditating more intensively in the past - several hours a day - my sleep was really erratic - I'd be wide away in the middle of the night, up late, up early... After a while I just stopped caring about sleep having to be a certain way.
That said, meditating less, avoiding meditating in the evening, cool showers, heavy foods, and lots of vigorous exercise help a lot. I find I get good and tired and sleep more heavily if I eat a heavy dinner or if I go for a vigrous swim or hike (usually only happens on weekends).
