Hypnagogic jerks = kriya? was created by amorfati
Hi all,

no big deal but I´ve noticed that for quite a while I tend to have hypnagogic jerks while falling asleep.
Usually they appear in my feet or legs but sometimes in my torso as well.
I wonder if these are the same as kriya which I never had on the cushion.
Does anyone have them as well?

Also I´ve noticed that the knowledge of mind/body (I think) seems to be "with me" somehow in general. E.g. I notice that some part of my body is moving or so and then I realize it´s relatet to some thought/mind-state.

Cheers
Sven

I couldn't say for sure, but they seem slightly different in "flavor" to me. I sometimes get a head jerk when I am going through an abrupt transition in mind state, but the falling asleep jerks feel more like "catching" myself as I lose consciousness.

They seem different to me, too. One is just a sort of spasm as the body relaxes into sleep (I'm sure there's some science on why it happens). Kriyas feel quite distinctive in "flavor" as orasis said, and are more often in the upper torso, head and neck (sometimes affecting the arms). They are often (always? trying to think if it's ever not the case) by mental activity: bliss, visions, lights, emotional states, trance states, awe, fear, etc.
